Stress Eating

When life gets stressful or you’re feeling anxious it’s really easy to eat unhealthily; you want comfort and enjoyment to distract you from the chaos all around.  But there’s more than one way to deal with stress.  If this is happening to you right now then there are other ways you can combat the overwhelm.

Fresh air works wonders

Nothing makes me feel better than a good walk, breathing in the fresh air, looking at the trees and, if the sun’s shining, turning my face to it for an uplifting vibe. Even if it’s for 10 minutes, do just get out, get some fresh air, clear the head and get perspective.

Nurture

Do some gardening – again, being outside does wonders for the spirits.  Growing and nurturing plants has a real feel good factor – if you’ve not got a garden, then plant some little pots to put on your window sill – mint is great for this – easy to grow and has so many uses; for drinks in the summer or as a tea, or to add a little extra zing to vegetables (involve the children if you have them).

Release the feel good factor

Exercise is not only good for your body but also good for your mental health.  When you exercise, the chemical seratonin is released into your blood stream, which contributes to well being and happiness.  Try a home workout – I haven’t exercised in a while so I’m doing Ketterlcise online 3 times a week to get fit …. it’s exhausting but I’m really enjoying it.  There are an amazing amount of online exercise classes out there – find something you like and add it to your routine several times a week.  (Have the kids join in !)

Talk

Speak to a friend, it is always good to talk, especially with someone you know and trust.  Putting the world to rights is a great way of releasing our emotions, and it’s lovely to have a good giggle with someone special.  With all of the video conferencing apps available nowadays, you can talk and see each other online – grab yourself a cuppa and have a virtual coffee morning.

Dance and be wild

Why not put some music on … sing out loud to it or dance with abandon around the room – my favourite for this is anything by Earth Wind & Fire, Kasabian or Seasons by Future Islands (I have an eclectic taste in music!). Do you know all of the words?

Learn something new

If you’ve got a hobby then spend some time each day crafting your skills, or why not start a new hobby?  Maybe there’s something you’ve always wanted to learn – now could be the time to do just that.  I can’t make my mind up between photography, golf, flower arranging or learning to fly.

Remember, food is the most commonly used way of dealing with stress but it generally has the most negative outcome.  Feed your mind, feed your soul, look after your body and your health.
